Judging People by their PastJames 2:13 So you must show mercy to others, or God will not show mercy to you when he judges you. But the person who shows mercy can stand without fear at the judgment.

Have you ever wondered what influences your perception of others? We tend to describe people based on what we’ve heard about them, even without meeting them personally. On the flip side, if you meet someone for the first time, you tend to describe the person based on their physical attributes and your perception of their personality.

We live in a world where people’s perception of you is determined by your past. The world keeps records of your past, even though you turned a new leaf. Your desire to change is plagued with condemnation because the world judges you based on your past mistakes. Romans 12:2 says “Do not be shaped by this world; instead be changed within by a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect.” The world rarely gives you a chance to prove you have changed, but God always gives you another chance when you repent and ask for his forgiveness. We thank God that with him, your past does not dictate your future. We display the character of Christ when we show mercy to people regardless of their past.

Consider how you would like to be judged by God. Do you deserve God’s mercy when you are quick to point out faults and mistakes others have made in their past? Would you rather be judged by your past? If you want God to show you mercy, start showing mercy to people around you. Changing a wrong perception of others isn’t easy, but with God’s help, you can begin to see others as God sees them. Begin to make an effort to describe others without referencing their faults, because you do not know what that person’s future holds. Most of us have something in our past we are not proud of and would rather forget about. Don’t be the person that brings people’s past into their present.

Ask God for wisdom on how to treat people with a fresh start!
