Inspiration for finding and fulfiling purpose.

A wild uninhabited area for forty days!? Just pause for a moment and imagine yourself alone for forty days, not a soul in sight, no food to eat. Just you...

I was meditating on the experience of Jesus in the wilderness and couldn't help but wonder why he needed so much time away from friends and family just to be alone with God. At the end of his fast, he became spiritually charged and ready to begin his assignment on earth, but Satan would not let him go just yet. He knew Jesus was hungry and tired from fasting and was so sure he would be vulnerable to his bidding.

His first trick seemed logical at first thought, because Jesus was so hungry at the time and a meal would not have been a bad idea, but as far as Jesus was concerned it wasn't about turning stones into bread, but the fact that Satan wanted him to prove he was the Son of God! What a challenge. Satan himself knew Jesus was the Son of God, being a fallen angel. I could liken it to someone asking you, "if you are the true son of your father, pick up the phone and call him dad!" Why prove what is an established fact?

Jesus knew immediately where the devil was taking this and answered, "It is written: "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." Matt 4:4.

Not satisfied with failure, the devil went a little further with his trickery and took Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple and made a similar challenge to the first;

“If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: "He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Matt 4:6.

Now, the devil thought, "I know the scriptures too!", and quoted Psalm 91:11. At this point, Jesus knew where he was going and answered, "It is written again, "Do not put the Lord your God to the test."

Still not content with loosing, the devil came up with an idea he thought Jesus would fall for, but unfortunately he had no scripture to back up his offer - the kingdoms of the world! Who would even think Jesus would trade his glory for earthly things!? At this point, Jesus was done with Satan and answered, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only." Matt 4:10.

Winning in life requires understanding and knowledge of the word of God. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 (NLT)

Jesus knew this and his victory over Satan was by the word. "For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12

Decide today and commit to spending time meditating on the word of God and storing it in your heart, and it will amaze you how victorious your life will be when you simply say "IT IS WRITTEN"
